Today we had gone to the Old Ursuline Convent, St. Louis Cathedral, and then on a cuisine tour. My favorite parts were going to the St. Louis Cathedral and the cuisine tour. What I liked most about the Old Ursuline Convent and St. Louis Cathedral were just looking at the architecture and beauty of them. The Old Ursuline Convent had a beautiful mural on the ceiling, beautiful stained glass, and beautiful detail to everywhere you looked. While looking at the stained glass there was one part that was black and white. He told us that it was originally painted but someone made the mistake of cleaning it (Oppps). When we went to the St Louis Cathedral I thought that was even prettier. They had spared no expense when it went to making that. I thought it was interesting hearing what the tour guide had to say about the Arch Bishop and the crest that they had. She said that part of his crest would have also been from the Arch Bishop before him. I don’t practice Catholicism, I am Protestant, but I found what she had to say to be intriguing. Lastly we went on the cuisine tour (which was my favorite part of class that day). We got to try many different foods, and also learn about the history of it. My favorite thing I tried was a dip that consisted of mayonnaise, sour cream, and spices. I wish I hadn’t eaten so much at lunch that day, because there was a generous portion of food to have been eaten on the tour.

One of the things I learned about today is how big Catholicism was in New Orleans when it was founded. At one point our tour guide said, “If you weren’t a Catholic back then you wouldn’t admit that to anyone and you’d keep it to yourself”. He even went on to tell us about how Marie Levau practiced both Voodoo and Catholicism. When we were at the Old Ursuline Convent he went on to tell us about the history of what we were looking at. He told us that they used Cypress trees for the trusses in the ceiling. He then went on to tell us that they were all the originals except for one, which needed replaced. I liked being able to look up at the ceiling and being able to see a more modern truss, compared to what the old ones looked like. What I most liked about this day was being able to go on the cuisine tour and try the different food. We got to learn about how things were made, as well as the history of the building we were in. We were at the Old Antoinette, and he told us how this was one of the longest running restaurants in New Orleans. He went on to tell us how at that time they didn’t have menus, and whatever was being cooked that day is what was for dinner. At first I didn’t realize why they would not have a menu, but it makes since when I realized that they didn’t have the options or availability to things like we do now. Overall my favorite parts were looking at the architecture and trying new foods.
