Art

While
walking around New Orleans there is artwork almost everywhere you look. You can notice artwork in the buildings
architecture, the street corners, galleries, and pretty much everywhere. While walking down Royal Street I stumbled
into an art gallery. I found an artist
work that I really liked by the name of Eric Lepape. I wasn’t able to take pictures of his work,
but I was able to view it, and was able to read information about him. I wouldn’t say this was my favorite art that
I saw the whole trip, but it was for when I went to galleries. I would say my favorite artwork I saw would
have been in the St. Louis Cathedral.
When walking into the St. Louis Cathedral everywhere you looked was
beautiful. I especially liked the
ceiling mural, the stained glass, and everything honestly. I also really enjoyed just walking around and
looking at all the artwork at Jackson Square.
There was artwork all over the fence, and I even talked to a few of the
artist. There was one piece of art I
really liked, it was a painting of the Preservation Hall. I made the mistake of taking a picture
without permission, and the man made me delete it. He was telling me he doesn’t allow pictures
because he doesn’t want people making prints of his work. I apologized to him and told him that I
wouldn’t know how to do that if I wanted to.
I deleted the picture and continued talking to him. I asked him how long he thinks he averages on
each painting, and he told me probably around 5 hours, but it varies. I found the artwork of this city to be some
of the most beautiful I have seen.

The artist I
liked most on Royale Street was by a man of the name Eric Lepape. I would say that the theme of most of his art
that I saw had to do with boats, water, and many vibrant colors. He seemed to be a fan of sticking to the
colors red, blue, yellow, and white, but there were many different variations
of those colors. I think that his
paintings seemed to have a calming feel to them, and this is probably because
they included water. What I liked most
about them was the use of colors he used (blue and red are my favorite
colors). There was a plaque by his art
and I jotted down a quote that he said which was, “Starting a canvas, I go on
impulse. I don’t like to control my
thinking; I let my unconscious take over and allow a sense of freedom of magic
to give way!”. I really liked this quote,
because whenever I draw I do the same thing.
I am not a good artist by any means, but I do enjoy drawing. Whenever I draw something I have no clue
where I am going with it, I usually just start with a line and go wherever it
takes me. I feel as if this is what he
meant by his quote, even though a lot of his paintings there had similar themes. I wish the artist were actually there so I could
talk to him, but I enjoyed looking at his art. (Just a side note I find it interesting that I couldn't take a picture of his art, but when I googled him I could find things that I am almost positive he painted.)
