Music

Outer

I have listened to many different kinds of music on this trip ranging from street performers using all horns, paint buckets as drums, cover bands, bluegrass, and jazz bands.  It is hard to say that I had one true favorite musical experience; I liked all of them that I had.  I made new friends at a few of the places that I went to, and we swapped information and said if we are at the same music festivals over the summer we will need to meet up.  I really enjoyed seeing this band that would do covers named the Legends, but they weren’t my favorite.  I did like their take on doing covers though, because they would add in a lot of improvisational jams.  I think that my overall favorite would be when I went to see some jazz.  They had a nice smooth way of playing, and it really drew my attention in.  The most fun I had seeing music would have been the last night of the trip.  I was with my friends up until dinnertime, and then I went and did my own thing.  I just walked around aimlessly by myself and went to multiple different places with music.  I would find some that I liked and would hangout their for awhile.  I had met up with a couple of people that I met earlier on the trip at a bar and listened to music with them.  After I met up with them I went off on my own again and found myself at a bar that was playing some funky jazz.  I ended my night by dancing by myself without a care in the world just having a good time, and this was probably the highlight of my trip.

Jazz

Inner

The city has spoken to me through music in many different ways.  The first way is that I found a new appreciation for jazz music.  I normally have a pretty specific taste in music, which would be considered jambands (drums, piano, guitar, bass; improvisational music); but I found a new appreciation for horns.  Another way the city spoken to me through music is that I was surprised about how there is music being played in New Orleans at almost any given hour of the day.   Whenever I have left a music festival in the past it always leaves me on a “music high”, and I am still experiencing that now.  I am noticing things in songs I have heard multiple times that I never have.  For example, songs that you would normally focus on the singing now I can only hear the background instrumental beat to it.  I start hearing songs, and I am constantly thinking of which way I would take it.  I think the most obvious way that I know the music affected me is I started lucid dreaming again (being able to realize I am in a dream and do what I want in the dream).  It is a very weird experience to have happen if you have never done it.  Part of the lucid dreams that I have started with I am conducting a band and telling them what to play until it’s a jam that I like (and have never heard).  The weird thing is that my ears will start ringing midway into this to the point it hurts and wakes me up.  The city has spoken to me in many ways through music, and I cant wait to be back.
